VISHWAROOPAM

Vishwaroopam, Kamal Haasan’s latest magnum opus is written and directed by the actor himself. The film stars Andrea, Pooja Kumar, Rahul Bose, Jaideep Ahlawat and Sekhar Kapur in key roles. The film also sees Kamal teaming up with the musical trio of Shankar Ehsaan and Loy after Aalavandhan in 2001.

Vishwaroopam

Singers: Suraj Jagan

Lyrics: Vairamuthu

Your ears are welcomed with an alarming intro, almost as if there’s a prison-break or a breach of security. It sets the tone perfectly for this menacing tune powered by heavy riffage. Suraj Jagan’s vocal delivery is powerful, singing powerfully from the gut. The chorus interludes sound like a holy chant and add good weight to the composition. Lyrically, the song has its moments that play straight to the gallery.

Thuppaki Engal Tholile

Singers: Benny Dayal, Kamal Haasan

Lyrics: Asif Ali Beg, Vairamuthu

What starts off with cool note-picking, a funky bass groove and English utterances, takes you on an unexpected ride where it gets darker, both lyrically and musically. Benny Dayal shows he’s totally at ease switching between English and Tamil, and Kamal’s singing style provides the perfect foil for this tune. There’s a musical shift towards the end from rock to a more Middle-Eastern style. The horns add nice drama and the drum solo in particular deserves a special mention.

Unnai Kannadhu Naan

Singers: Kamal Haasan, Shankar Mahadevan

Lyrics: Vairamuthu

A thoroughly enjoyable Hindustani classical tune with Kamal belting out the recitations and taals with the precision of a pro. The genre is right up Shankar Mahadevan’s alley and one can sense that the singer himself is enjoying every bit of the song. Despite being a ‘traditional’ tune, the song has everything going for it in terms of melody, hooks and convincing performances. One can expect the visuals of Kamal’s expressive performance as a Kathak dancer to make this song truly memorable.

Anu Vidhaiththa Boomiyile

Singers: Kamal Haasan, Nikhil D’ Souza

Lyrics: Kamal Haasan

A sort of a post-apocalyptic gloom reigns over the tune right from the get-go. The opening English verses communicate a desperate want for change. Kamal then chips in with his Tamil vocals, words that he has written himself. The orchestration by the string section is dramatic just for the right amount of time before the eerie intro returns to fade the song to a close.

Vishwaroopam (Remix)

Singers: Remixed by Shane Mendosa, Suraj Jagan

Lyrics: Vairamuthu

A remix version of the title track but set to club beats. While the remix is well executed with some unexpected changes of grooves and good use of the break-down, what it lacks is the grit and intensity of the original track.

Verdict: What works for this album is the sound of Shankar Ehsan and Loy that the Tamil audiences are exposed to after a considerable period of time. They bring their A-game to the party and it’s a highly focused effort with absolutely no room for fillers. Seriously good!

Moondru-Per-Moondru-Kadhal

Moondru Per Moondru Kadhal marks the return of director Vasanth after his highly acclaimed last outing Satham Podadhey. This film also reunites him with composer Yuvan Shankar Raja with whom he’s worked on a couple of earlier occasions and with great success. All the lyrics have been penned by Na. Muthukumar.

Aaha Kaadhal Konji Pesudhe…
Singers: Nandini Erikar
Lyrics : Na Muthukumar

The album opens with a beautiful raga-rock tune. The contrast is beautiful with the singer’s carnatic intonations while the backing band supports her with a bluesy groove. A particular portion of the melody does seem to lead towards a popular Ilayaraja tune ‘Entha Poovilum Vasam Undru’ but goes elsewhere. The singer Nandini brings a delightful and authentic feminine personality to the tune with her voice and performance. The orchestration includes interludes that feature violin, accordion and flute segments, giving it a refreshing feel of an ‘early morning song’.

Kaadhal Enthan Kaadhal…
Singers: Neha Bhasin
Lyrics : Na Muthukumar

The build-up of the song is quite impressive. What begins as a very sober yet haunting melody explodes into something that you can’t help yourself from bobbing your head or tapping your feet to. The track’s use of the morsing and processed beats provides a great groove. Neha Bhasin delivers a performance with an attitude that the track demands. The song has several sing-along moments, which really is one of the indications of a hit song and the nadhaswaram hook is.. well, off the hook !

Mazhai Mazhai…
Singers: Karthik, Shwetha
Lyrics : Na Muthukumar

While the opening segment prepares you for the usual mellifluous tune about rain, be warned that the track does not subscribe to standard templates or song structures. Lot of changes fill up the song which may require a few listens to fully follow and comprehend. The orchestration is pretty heavy with a lot going on. There’s plenty going on with the vocals as well, from solo segments, to exchanges to harmonies between Karthik and Shwetha who deliver excellent performances.

Padapadakkudhu Maname…
Singers: Krish,BlaZe
Lyrics : Na Muthukumar

This one is right up Yuvan’s alley with the R&B style of tune. It’s the kind of music the young generation comes to expect of Yuvan and he doesn’t disappoint. The accordion segment is pretty nice even if it’s repetitive. Popular rapper BlaZe gets an opportunity to present himself differently as he sings melody apart from fluent rap portions. Krish’s segments are almost freestyle that lives a life of its own but is made to nicely compliment the tune with its crafty placement. Musically, the tune might be commonplace for listeners who follow international pop music.

Unakkagave Uyir Vaalgiren…
Singers: Yuvan Shankar Raja
Lyrics : Na.Muthkumar

Yuvan wins bragging right for being the first to bring dubstep to Tamil film music. Fans of the genre though might feel that it’s toned down a notch for the regional audience who may not be familiar to this style of music. Yuvan drops some nice beats but the melody is still king and he delivers it in his own unique voice literally making the song his own. There are some nifty video-game-ish musical effects that he used in his other recent release Aadhi Bhagavan.

Stop The Paatu…
Singers: Ramesh Vinayagam
Lyrics : Na.Muthkumar

The song has the potential to become the most widely sung tune particularly for its pumping percussions and lyrical content. This might be the only song on the album that is pretty direct in terms of melody and approach. The chorus and the instrumental hooks are all in its usual place but there is experimentation in the interludes. Ramesh Vinayagam sings the song well with pep as well as irony.

Verdict: Overall, the album might have been described as ‘post-modern’ by the director, but it’s an easily approachable album where each listener can pick a different track as their favorite. Yuvan Shankar Raja does things his own way, and does it mighty good!

thuppakki songs

Thuppakki brings together Vijay and Harris Jayaraj again after the successful Nanban, for one of the year’s most anticipated projects. The album has 6 songs and 1 instrumental theme. One of the key highlights being the return of Vijay as a singer.

Kutti Puli Kootam..
Singer(s): Hariharan, Tippu, Additional vocals by Narayanan, Satyan & Ranina Reddy
Lyrics: Viveka

A wailing chant in Hindi welcomes the listeners and they are soon greeted by galloping Indian percussions. The lyrics indicate it to be the hero’s introduction but it’s refreshingly restrained rather than being an over-the-top explosive intro song. The orchestration during the verses is fairly minimalistic throwing emphasis in the words and the rhythm. Hariharan delivers this song in his imitable style and injects the tune with more energy. The chorus adds the cherry on top of this treat for Vijay fans.

Antartica..
Singer(s): Vijay Prakash, Krish, Rajeev (Rap), Additional vocals by Devan
Lyrics: Karky

The track is completely guitar driven. There are strains of acoustic, distortion and a funk style guitar sound that make for the groove of the song. The combination of Vijay Prakash and Krish sounds like a good choice of singers for Vijay. The vocal harmonies on show are beautifully executed. The words by Karky are youthful.

Poi Varava..
Singer(s): Karthik, Additional Vocals by Chinmayi
Lyrics: Pa. Vijay

A melancholic tune set to the sounds of mostly an acoustic guitar. The words by Pa.Vijay suggest that this is a song about the pain of an army officer leaving home. The beautiful bugle interlude reaffirms the connection with the army. The song attempts to capture both the patriotic as well as the human emotions of a soldier. Karthik sings it in just the right emotions to raise enough sympathy without making it sound overtly pathos.

Google google..
Singer(s): Vijay, Andrea, Rap – Joe, Krishna Iyer
Lyrics: Karky

Harris offers a track in the electropop genre that’s become ever so popular with artists like LMFAO and Psy. The song’s real highlight would certainly have to be the playful lyrics. The words are carefully penned to cater to the youth’s current sensibilities like nightlife, internet and so forth. The song serves as perfect platform for Vijay to return as a singer and he performs it in a gracefully laidback style that’s a reflection of his personality. The spoken-word rap segments are quirky and enjoyable and build up nicely to a catchy chorus. One feels that the track might also give some insight about the chemistry between the lead pair.

Vennilave..
Singer(s): Hariharan, Bombay Jayashri
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

Harris Jayaraj turns to his ace singing pair of Hariharan and Bombay Jayashri to croon this melody. This is probably the reason why this song gives the listener some semblance of compositions from Bheema. The song opens with a charming Hindi chorus but makes a forceful transition into the Tamil verses. But the Hindi chorus returns later in the song justifying its presence. Flute and Flamenco parts featured in this track stand out for instrumental performances. Adding a delay to the flute solo is a clever production by the composer. Na. Muthukumar’s words are deep and romantic.

Alaikka laikaa…
Singer(s): Javed Ali, Sayanora Philip, Sharmila
Lyrics: Pa. Vijay

It’s total electric guitar overdrive on this song that’s backed by a pounding drum-line that is sustained throughout the song. The drum-line helps to keep the track up-tempo and bouncy all throughout. The guitar picking in the background is a common Harris touch but it can go unnoticed if your volume levels are low. The lyrics are designed to play to the gallery by keeping it colloquial and fun like making references to Agarwal sweets and such. Javed Ali and Sayanora lend their unique voices for a track that is manufactured towards Vijay’s strength as a supreme dancer.

Jagdish On A Mission (Theme)
Instrumental

The theme traverses from a down tempo electronic segment that has heroic undertones into a menacing distorted guitar driven hard rock segment that’s racy and intense only to return to the opening down tempo segment, this time sounding accomplished and victorious.

billa-2-movie4

On Thala Ajith’s birthday, the audio of Billa 2 has released with tremendous buzz and expectations. Sony music has done a great job in marketing the audio release as a huge event with their proactive presence on the social networking space. Now, straight onto the audio review of this Yuvan musical.

Madurai Ponnu…
Andrea Jeremiah

A song with Arabic shades and a genre which is pretty familiar to Yuvan. He is a past master at such seductive yet rustic item numbers. ‘Theepidika’ will definitely come to mind. BGM bits from Mankatha surprisingly make an appearance at more than a few instances in this song which is apparently set in the backdrop of a brothel. Can expect to see some gyrating moves on screen thanks to the foot tapping ‘tavil’ beats and the bevy of item dancers, supposedly in this song.

Billa 2 theme …
Yuvan Shankar Raja

The legendary theme of Billa 2007 has been taken and made more intense with usage of heavy instruments. Suits the larger than life screen presence of Thala and the character of David Billa. The theme has a haunting as well as a pulsating quality to it, with the ending whistles taking the cake.

Yedho Mayakkam …
Yuvan Shankar Raja, Tanvi Shah and Suvi Suresh

A club song that can be predicted to set the dance floors on fire with its naughty and endearing quality, thanks to a super peppy effort by Tanvi Shah and Suri Suresh. The native ‘nadaswaram’ touches to this song are admirable. It would be interesting to see how Thala grooves to this super youthful song as such songs have been the trademark of the STR-Yuvan combo. Can expect this song to be on the playlist of all city slickers for some time to come. The pick of the album, without a shade of a doubt.

Gang Gang Gang …
Yuvan Shankar Raja and Stefny

The first teaser song that was released to tremendous response and as expected, its full version is terrific as well. The trance, hip-hop and techno touches to this song are typical of Yuvan. The lyrics expectedly reek of heroism and these are already in the hearts of all Thala fans. The tune revolves around the legendary theme music.

Idhayam …
Shweta Pandit

A mellifluous melody that has a haunting mood to it thanks to the tasteful usage of tabla, flute and veena. This song is sort of a female reprise to ‘Engeyo Paartha’ from ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’. Shweta Pandit will probably put up stiff competition to the likes of Shreya Ghoshal. Such is her rendition in this song. Would be interesting to see the romantic side of Ajith in this song.

Unakkulle Mirugam …
Ranjith

This song talks about the animal that resides in each human being and the philosophies of David Billa, the man. The treatment of the song is hardcore ‘Rock’. The theme music makes a guest appearance as part of the instrumentals of this song as well.

Verdict: The songs have given even more push to the pre-release buzz that has already been hitting the peak. The Thala Yuvan combo continues to rock with another youthful album. Until the next biggie comes around, Billa 2 will stay on top of the charts merrily.

Tamil Movie Manam Kothi Paravai Posters

One time hotshot director S. Ezhil is making a comeback with current crowd favorite Siva Karthikeyan in the lead. Ezhil has a reputation for making clean family entertainers. Imman has been entrusted with the music and Imman has a pretty decent track record in the industry. Is he in good form? Let’s find out.

Dang Dang…
Saisharan and S.Malavika

After the super success of the ‘Jingu Chikka’ song in ‘Mynaa’, Imaan traverses on a very similar path with this song. It is foot tapping but the sheer magic created by the earlier song is hard to live up to. The singers have the required fizz to make the song enjoyable, nevertheless. Can visit the charts for sure but real popularity can be expected only when the film hits the screens.

Jal Jal Jal Oosai…
Aalaap Raju and Surmukhi

Aalaap Raju seems to have enjoyed himself singing this romantic number. The beats are likable while the tabla percussions and the instrumentals comprising flute and Spanish guitar make sure the song retains the charm right through.

Oorana Oorukkulla…
Santhosh Hariharan

This is a folksy number ridden with a bit of pathos in the lyrics. The violin adds to the mellow mood of the song. The beats are energetic and make sure the song is entertaining. The lead singer is expressive. As the hero sings about his skewed love life, we can expect the scene to be of the hero along with a group of his friends.

Po Po Po…
Javed Ali

The name of the song gives an idea about the genre of the song straightaway, a love failure song again. Javed Ali is back after a small hiatus and his pronunciation is much polished compared to some of his previous efforts in Tamil. The instrumentals before both the stanzas are dramatic and have elaborate arrangements. The end violin instrumentals make the song even more passionate. This song might find many takers in the male crowd.

Yenna Solla…
Vijay Prakash, Chinmayi Sripada

The song begins on a classy note with strings and what follows is a likable duet which has tasteful instrumentals with a lot of variety. The guitar usage in particular and the female chorus endear the song even more. The song moves at a steady pace with pretty heavy percussive usage.

Verdict: Imman has a winner with this Ezhil movie. After ‘Mynaa’ the expectations from him are high and this album has done no harm to his status as a composer of note.

ishtam

Ishtam is an upcoming romantic film directed by Prem Nizar, starring Vimal and Nisha Agarwal. A remake of the Telugu film Yemaindi Ee Vela (2010), Ishtam is getting ready for release. Vimal’s suave makeover and Kajal’s sister Nisha’s Tamil debut have been the talking points. Music director Thaman has been on a hot winning streak in both Tamil and Telugu. Has his magical streak gotten better? Find out.

Vaenna Vaenna…
Rahul Nambiar
Lyrics : Na Muthukumar

Instantly likeable with very catchy beats that are gentle and easy on the ear. A song that talks about the hero’s aversion towards money, strangely. Very interesting. Has the potential to become a huge hit. The chorus “I don’t don’t want a one rupee coin” is the signature catch phrase of this song. Great start to the album

Oru Megham…
MLR Karthikeyan, Divya
Lyrics: Viveka

A signature Thaman song that is good to listen to but nothing special. The female singer is refreshing and brings the ‘cool’ element to the song. The beats are catchy and the instrumentals are decent. A passable fast melody. The male singer’s voice has needlessly been synthesized.

Dhinnakku Dhina…
MLR Karthikeyan, Rita
Lyrics : Na Muthukumar

Has a nice classical touch to it though it doesn’t lose out on the universal likeability quotient too. The female singer again brings in the necessary zing to the song. The male vocals remind of Shankar Mahadevan’s. A nice attempt by Thaman. He has gone out of his comfort zone for this song. Has the Rahman feel to it. Good job

Yenmele Indru…
Rahul Nambiar, Megha
Lyrics: Viveka

Another winner in this album. Super beats with cool and trendy vocals. The youth will dig into this. The instrumentals before the first stanza are quirky and make an impact.

Aaruyire…
Ranjith, Priyadharshini
Lyrics : Na Muthukumar

After some interesting numbers, this number brings the album down a notch. Thaman’s favorite Ranjith is in his heavily synthesized mode in this song. The female vocals are refreshing amid the average stuff around.

Verdict: Thaman has another winner in hand after Osthe and the recent sensation KSY. Light hearted and entertaining album.

Starring: Vimal, Nisha Agarwal, Anoop Kumar, Parvathi Nifran, Pragathi, Yuvarani
Direction: Premi Nizar
Music: Thaman S
Production: Ramesh Dhantra
Vocals: Rahul Nambiar, MLR Karthikeyan, Divya, Rita, Megha, Ranjith, Priyadharshini
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar, Viveka

Tracklist-_3

3 is the debut directorial effort of Aishwarya Dhanush starring her husband and her contemporary Shruti Haasan. The involvement of the family members of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, the presence of the National Award winning Dhanush fresh from his knockout performance in ‘Mayakkam Enna’, the super-hot lead pair and of course the ‘Why this Kolaveri’ rage have all made 3 among the most anticipated films of 2012. Let’s see how Anirudh, the most noted debut composer in recent times, has fared with ’3′

A Life full of Love – Theme Music…

Totally haunting theme music bit featuring a symphony of violins. Reminiscent of the great western classical musicians of the past. What a way to kick start one’s film career! Sure to give goose bumps to listeners from all age groups. A royal salute to Anirudh

Come on Girls…
Nadisha Thomas, Malavika Manoj
Dhanush

Some funky, out-of-the box singing with a catchy chorus line “la la la la”. Lots of random usage of instruments like nadaswaram and Carnatic alaps. Will depend on the visuals for greater impact. Targeted at the young hep crowd all the way.

Idhazhin Oram…
Ajesh Ashok, Anirudh
Aishwarya Dhanush

The tune, the chorus, the funky sounds and the beats are so similar to Yuvan’s signature style. The lyrics talk about the hero’s love for his girl, as expected. Aishwarya Dhanush’s debut effort at lyric writing. Somehow, a heard before feel, all over this song. Sounds good, though!

Kannazhaga…
Shruthi Haasan, Dhanush
Dhanush

Dhanush’s voice sounds very different in this song. It has some lovely flute, string and violin bits. The theme music of the movie is also beautifully integrated in the instrumentals of this song. Shruthi’s husky style of pronunciation sits well on this song too.

Nee Partha Vizhigal…
Vijay Yesudas, Swetha Mohan
Dhanush

The song begins with a stylish yet old world charm, associated with the ‘Raja’ clan. Ilayaraja style composition, nice unhurried singing from the lead singers combined with some trendy mixing gimmicks, make this song an aural treat.

Po Nee Po…
Mohit Chauhan, Anirudh
Dhanush

The men behind the 2 flavors of the season ‘Saadda Haq’ and ‘Kolaveri ‘join hands for this song. The song begins with a nice piano bit that sets the mood for the rest of the song. Mohit infuses a lot of feeling into his rendition for this song that talks about the pain of separation at love. His pronunciation is average. Somehow the ‘Rockstar’ hangover is still there in his voice that sounds like Adnan Sami’s earlier attempts at Tamil like ‘Oru Kal’ and ‘Hey Inda Kadhal’.

Po Nee Po remix – The scream of love…
Sathya Prakash, Harish Swaminathan

The heavy metal elements are the highlight of this song. This genre of world music is quite new to Tamil film music. And when heavy metal is infused with flute, it is a nice pleasant surprise. The song really picks-up after a typical remix-like start.

The Rhythm of Love – Theme Music
Naveen Iyer

The starting beats of this theme are like the ‘Ram Ram’ song from ‘Hey Ram’. A nice fusion of classical flute, electric guitar and rustic beats. Sounds quite chaotic. An offbeat attempt on the whole.

Theme of 3
Mandolin Seenu, Aathan

This theme has the Arabic touch to it. The idea behind using mandolin is laudable. An uplifting experience.

Why this Kolaveri Di…
Dhanush
Dhanush

Much discussed, much loved and a matter of national debate for well over a month. The usage of English words in such an informal manner, Dhanush’s drunken style rendition, his constant friendly banter with the music composer, his natural ease at expressing feelings, the rustic beats and nadaswaram (pa pa pa) etc. etc. There is so much going for this song. The term ‘soup boys’ is like a big legend now. Can’t wait to see this song on screen. 3 will earn big bucks in the opening weekend on the strength of this song alone.

Verdict: Anirudh Ravichander has delivered so much variety in his very first album. Such a promising debut by a composer hasn’t been seen in recent Tamil cinema history. ‘Kolaveri’ took the initial honors but there are so many other melodic treats that 3 offers. On the whole, an album that will sell like hot cakes.

Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal Music Review

‘Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal’ is a romantic flick starring Atharva and Amala Paul in the lead roles, directed by Elred Kumar. The producers are hoping to repeat the ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’ and ‘Ko’ magic with this film. With already a single track ‘Oru Murai’ from the movie released in September becoming a hit, expectations are high for the album, composed by GV Prakash Kumar. Now let’s check out its musical facts.

Kangal Neeyae…
Singers: Sithara
Lyrics: Thamarai

The album’s most melodramatically rich soundtrack ‘Kangal Neeyae’ is G.V.Prakash Kumar’s surprise offering of the lot. Sitara’s classically refined voice proves to be a perfect choice for the soundtrack as it mellows well in high notes with classically sounding musical arrangements. This somber number works well with the highly expressive lyrics of Thamarai.

Mazhai Pozhiyum…
Singers: Aalap Raju, Megha and G.V.Prakash Kumar
Lyrics: Thamarai

Urbane sounding, high on zealous with spunky electronic beats make the next track ‘Mazhai Pozhiyum’ a laudable addition to the album. Aalap Raju, Megha and G.V.Prakash Kumar offer an exhilarating listening affair that breathes the aura of hippy modern feel. G.V Prakash compiles this racy track with delectable contemporary style that delivers an upbeat pep factor.

Oh Sunandha…
Singers: Raman Mahadevan, Caroline and Megha
Lyrics: Thamarai

G.V.Prakash Kumar brings out his impressive flair of instrumentals in ‘Oh Sunandha’ like the delectable electric guitar riffs in the prelude that connects well with the enticing feel of the track. Raman Mahadevan’s lighthearted singing is very impressive and so does the chorus of Caroline & Megha. The change in tempos and moods are handled well by the beautiful orchestration.

Oru Murai…
Singers: G.V.Prakash Kumar, Blaaze and Andrea
Lyrics: Thamarai

The next track ‘Oru Murai’ has an International musical feel to it where both English and Tamil lyrics work well in tandem to epitomize out a cherishable entertainer. Though this sound track kindles the memories of Akon’s ft.T-Pain hola hola, it is a well crafted number in its own league. It sounds as a heavily auto-tuned R&B track, but packs enough spice in the form of rap by Benny Dayal and a cool boisterous show by G.V.Prakashkumar that will turn out to be a chartbusting number.

Sokku Podi…
Singers: Baba Segal, Shruti Hassan
Lyrics: Thamarai

The need of loud feasting dancing track in the album is fulfilled in the song ‘Sokku Podi’. Baba Segal’s throaty vocals join hands with Shruthi Hassan’s booming voice in creating an enthusiastically high track that will deliver sufficient amusement on the dancing floor. G.V. gives a beat that turns on the celebratory mood and maintains the high spirit of the song.

Yaar Aval Yaro…
Singers: Mohammed Irfan
Lyrics: Thamarai

The final offering ‘Yaar Aval Yaro’ adds more glam quotient to the show. Mohammed Irfan’s fresh soothing vocals give it an edgy romantic feel and amplify with varying emotional moods of the track. It is a highly trendy and infectious track with the right mix of electronic arrangements and cute addition of Hindustani elements.

GV Prakash Kumar delivers an outstanding album that will be drawing much appreciation and acceptance from the listeners. Chartbusters like ‘Oru Murai’, ‘Yaar Aval Yaro’ are cherry picks and the album lives up to its hyped expectations.

Verdict: Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal – Always cherishable.

Vettai-Single-Track

‘Vettai’ marks the coming together of actor Madhavan and director Lingusamy after ‘Run’ (2002) and also the collaboration of Lingusamy with Yuvan Shankar Raja after their super-hit ‘Paiyya’. The film revolves around two brothers and stars Madhavan, Arya, Sameera Reddy and Amala Paul in the lead roles. Four days prior to the audio release, the song “Pappappa” was launched as a single track and received a great reception in Youtube. Now let’s analyze the album.

Pa Pappa Pappa Pappa…
Singers: Yuvan Shankar Raja, Renu
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

Its party time, as the first track of the album ‘Pappa Pappa Pappapa’ has all rural elements in the right place. The highlight is of course the clever mix of folksy musical arrangements that make for a good celebration number. Yuvan’s fun-filled singing comes alive and is ably supported by the peppy sounding Renu.

Dham Dham Dham…
Singers: Karthik, Krish
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

The next song, ‘Dham Dham’ is naturally an all out boy charmer fun number that bears the stamp of Lingusamy legacy! It’s another attempt to recreate the yesteryear’s hit number ‘Theradi Veethiyil’ from Run. The mellifluous voice of Karthik and Krish make the mood merrier in this quite pleasant sounding number.

Kattipidi Enna…
Singers: Vijay Prakash, Shwetha Pandit
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

With simple musical composition and filmy predictable lyrics, Yuvan has managed to create this charming love song. The lovely vocals of Vijay Prakash and Shwetha Pandit are just soothing, especially Vijay Prakash who croons his heart out. Another decent pick that is worth listening to.

Thaiyath Thakka…
Singers: Harini, Saindhavi
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

After the boys outing number in ‘Dham dham’, it’s the girls turn in ‘Thaiyya Thakka’. It is a cool, effortless soundtrack composed between two sisters in their search for a perfect groom which piles up for a reasonable sounding entertainer. As far as the composition is concerned, it comes like a mix and match of sweet folksy tune wrapped in a mild kuthu. Saindhavi’s suave singing with Harini’s minty fresh vocals establish the lovable chemistry between the two sisters.

Dhama Dhama…
Singers: Haricharan, Swetha Mohan
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

A gentle flute, easy percussions, singers Haricharan-Sheweta Mohan playing the perfect foil and Na.Muthukumar’s uncomplicated lyrics complete the song. But the highlight is the ‘Vaaranam aayiram’ piece.

Vettai has some peppy likeable soundtracks to its credits. Even if it’s not Yuvan’s best, Vettai packages all genres of folksy music well. With songs like ‘Pappa Pappa’ and the romantic ‘Kattipudi’, the album is all set to turn out to be a commercial winner.

Verdict: Yuvan’s folky affair!

Rajapattai

Raja Pattai is quite a different film for director Susintheeran and actor Vikram for their previous movies were based on exceptional themes. With the attempts of making a commercial movie, the duo comes together and it’s a musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja with Yugabharathi penning lyrics. The album comprises of 5 tracks that includes a reprised version of Podi Paiyan Polave.

1. Podi Paiyan Polave
Voices: Haricharan
Lyrics: Yugabharathi

Yuvan goes for a simple composition for the beats and instrumentals are so simple. It may take some more time for the song to grab our attention. The mixing is done with excellence, but we don’t find an engrossing factor with the lyrics. The song is middling and doesn’t sound like a piece of work from Yuvan Shankar Raja. Haricharan does his job perfectly.

2. Laddu Laddu Rendu
Voices: Vikram, Priyadarshini, Suchitra
Lyrics: Yugabharathi

The music director has tried to rendering the Kuthu song in late 80s style as in his father Maestro Ilayaraja’s style. Well, we can sense it with the bass, brass and the rhythmic accompaniment. In order to offer a transition, he goes for a DJ kind of work during second verse. The song will be a sure treat for the frontbenchers in theatres with Chiyaan Vikram shaking legs with hotties Reema Sen and Shriya Charan.

3. Villathi Villain
Voices: Mano, Malathi
Lyrics: Yugabharathi

Much alike the previous track, Yuvan goes for the retro-style track. It’s evident with the vocalizing pattern, Live Drums, etc, etc. The song should keep the audiences engrossed with the visuals and the scintillating appearance of Vikram in different get-ups.

4. Paniye Panipoove
Vocals: Javed Ali, Renuka
Lyrics: Yugabharathi

Melodious pick with the singers Javed Ali and Renuka adding more intensity to the romantic feel. It’s a situational song and the lyrics are just average. Yuvan keeps shifting between major and minor scales. The string works can be regarded as one of the best works that occurs during the second interlude.

Raja Pattai has a mixture of mediocre and good tracks. Yuvan Shankar Raja has clearly understood the nature of film ‘Commercial Genre’. ‘Laddu Laddu’ and ‘Villathi Villain’ will surely arrests the senses of audiences.

Production: PVP Cinemas
Direction: Susintheeran
Star-casts: Vikram, Deeksha Seth, K Viswanath and others
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja
Lyrics: Yugabharathi
Verdict: Could have been better from Yuvan
