The album opens with a beautiful raga-rock tune. The contrast is beautiful with the singer’s carnatic intonations while the backing band supports her with a bluesy groove. A particular portion of the melody does seem to lead towards a popular Ilayaraja tune ‘Entha Poovilum Vasam Undru’ but goes elsewhere. The singer Nandini brings a delightful and authentic feminine personality to the tune with her voice and performance. The orchestration includes interludes that feature violin, accordion and flute segments, giving it a refreshing feel of an ‘early morning song’.

The build-up of the song is quite impressive. What begins as a very sober yet haunting melody explodes into something that you can’t help yourself from bobbing your head or tapping your feet to. The track’s use of the morsing and processed beats provides a great groove. Neha Bhasin delivers a performance with an attitude that the track demands. The song has several sing-along moments, which really is one of the indications of a hit song and the nadhaswaram hook is.. well, off the hook !

While the opening segment prepares you for the usual mellifluous tune about rain, be warned that the track does not subscribe to standard templates or song structures. Lot of changes fill up the song which may require a few listens to fully follow and comprehend. The orchestration is pretty heavy with a lot going on. There’s plenty going on with the vocals as well, from solo segments, to exchanges to harmonies between Karthik and Shwetha who deliver excellent performances.

This one is right up Yuvan’s alley with the R&B style of tune. It’s the kind of music the young generation comes to expect of Yuvan and he doesn’t disappoint. The accordion segment is pretty nice even if it’s repetitive. Popular rapper BlaZe gets an opportunity to present himself differently as he sings melody apart from fluent rap portions. Krish’s segments are almost freestyle that lives a life of its own but is made to nicely compliment the tune with its crafty placement. Musically, the tune might be commonplace for listeners who follow international pop music.

Yuvan wins bragging right for being the first to bring dubstep to Tamil film music. Fans of the genre though might feel that it’s toned down a notch for the regional audience who may not be familiar to this style of music. Yuvan drops some nice beats but the melody is still king and he delivers it in his own unique voice literally making the song his own. There are some nifty video-game-ish musical effects that he used in his other recent release Aadhi Bhagavan.

The song has the potential to become the most widely sung tune particularly for its pumping percussions and lyrical content. This might be the only song on the album that is pretty direct in terms of melody and approach. The chorus and the instrumental hooks are all in its usual place but there is experimentation in the interludes. Ramesh Vinayagam sings the song well with pep as well as irony.

Verdict: Overall, the album might have been described as ‘post-modern’ by the director, but it’s an easily approachable album where each listener can pick a different track as their favorite. Yuvan Shankar Raja does things his own way, and does it mighty good!

A wailing chant in Hindi welcomes the listeners and they are soon greeted by galloping Indian percussions. The lyrics indicate it to be the hero’s introduction but it’s refreshingly restrained rather than being an over-the-top explosive intro song. The orchestration during the verses is fairly minimalistic throwing emphasis in the words and the rhythm. Hariharan delivers this song in his imitable style and injects the tune with more energy. The chorus adds the cherry on top of this treat for Vijay fans.

The track is completely guitar driven. There are strains of acoustic, distortion and a funk style guitar sound that make for the groove of the song. A melancholic tune set to the sounds of mostly an acoustic guitar. The words by Pa.Vijay suggest that this is a song about the pain of an army officer leaving home. The beautiful bugle interlude reaffirms the connection with the army. The song attempts to capture both the patriotic as well as the human emotions of a soldier. Karthik sings it in just the right emotions to raise enough sympathy without making it sound overtly pathos.

The words are carefully penned to cater to the youth’s current sensibilities like nightlife, internet and so forth. The song serves as perfect platform for Vijay to return as a singer and he performs it in a gracefully laidback style that’s a reflection of his personality. The spoken-word rap segments are quirky and enjoyable and build up nicely to a catchy chorus. One feels that the track might also give some insight about the chemistry between the lead pair.

Harris Jayaraj turns to his ace singing pair of Hariharan and Bombay Jayashri to croon this melody. This is probably the reason why this song gives the listener some semblance of compositions from Bheema. The song opens with a charming Hindi chorus but makes a forceful transition into the Tamil verses. But the Hindi chorus returns later in the song justifying its presence. Flute and Flamenco parts featured in this track stand out for instrumental performances. Adding a delay to the flute solo is a clever production by the composer. Na. Muthukumar’s words are deep and romantic.

It’s total electric guitar overdrive on this song that’s backed by a pounding drum-line that is sustained throughout the song. The drum-line helps to keep the track up-tempo and bouncy all throughout. The guitar picking in the background is a common Harris touch but it can go unnoticed if your volume levels are low. The lyrics are designed to play to the gallery by keeping it colloquial and fun like making references to Agarwal sweets and such. Javed Ali and Sayanora lend their unique voices for a track that is manufactured towards Vijay’s strength as a supreme dancer.

A song with Arabic shades and a genre which is pretty familiar to Yuvan. He is a past master at such seductive yet rustic item numbers. ‘Theepidika’ will definitely come to mind. BGM bits from Mankatha surprisingly make an appearance at more than a few instances in this song which is apparently set in the backdrop of a brothel. Can expect to see some gyrating moves on screen thanks to the foot tapping ‘tavil’ beats and the bevy of item dancers, supposedly in this song.

The legendary theme of Billa 2007 has been taken and made more intense with usage of heavy instruments. Suits the larger than life screen presence of Thala and the character of David Billa. The theme has a haunting as well as a pulsating quality to it, with the ending whistles taking the cake.

A club song that can be predicted to set the dance floors on fire with its naughty and endearing quality, thanks to a super peppy effort by Tanvi Shah and Suri Suresh. The native ‘nadaswaram’ touches to this song are admirable. It would be interesting to see how Thala grooves to this super youthful song as such songs have been the trademark of the STR-Yuvan combo. Can expect this song to be on the playlist of all city slickers for some time to come. The pick of the album, without a shade of a doubt.

The first teaser song that was released to tremendous response and as expected, its full version is terrific as well. The trance, hip-hop and techno touches to this song are typical of Yuvan. The lyrics expectedly reek of heroism and these are already in the hearts of all Thala fans. The tune revolves around the legendary theme music.

A mellifluous melody that has a haunting mood to it thanks to the tasteful usage of tabla, flute and veena. This song is sort of a female reprise to ‘Engeyo Paartha’ from ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’. Shweta Pandit will probably put up stiff competition to the likes of Shreya Ghoshal. Such is her rendition in this song. Would be interesting to see the romantic side of Ajith in this song.

This song talks about the animal that resides in each human being and the philosophies of David Billa, the man. The treatment of the song is hardcore ‘Rock’. The theme music makes a guest appearance as part of the instrumentals of this song as well.

Verdict: The songs have given even more push to the pre-release buzz that has already been hitting the peak. The Thala Yuvan combo continues to rock with another youthful album. Until the next biggie comes around, Billa 2 will stay on top of the charts merrily.

After the super success of the ‘Jingu Chikka’ song in ‘Mynaa’, Imaan traverses on a very similar path with this song. It is foot tapping but the sheer magic created by the earlier song is hard to live up to. The singers have the required fizz to make the song enjoyable, nevertheless. Can visit the charts for sure but real popularity can be expected only when the film hits the screens.

Aalaap Raju seems to have enjoyed himself singing this romantic number. The beats are likable while the tabla percussions and the instrumentals comprising flute and Spanish guitar make sure the song retains the charm right through.

This song might find many takers in the male crowd.

The song begins on a classy note with strings and what follows is a likable duet which has tasteful instrumentals with a lot of variety. The guitar usage in particular and the female chorus endear the song even more. The song moves at a steady pace with pretty heavy percussive usage.

Verdict: Imman has a winner with this Ezhil movie. After ‘Mynaa’ the expectations from him are high and this album has done no harm to his status as a composer of note.

The male vocals remind of Shankar Mahadevan’s. A nice attempt by Thaman. He has gone out of his comfort zone for this song. Has the Rahman feel to it. Good job

Mohit infuses a lot of feeling into his rendition for this song that talks about the pain of separation at love. His pronunciation is average. Somehow the ‘Rockstar’ hangover is still there in his voice that sounds like Adnan Sami’s earlier attempts at Tamil like ‘Oru Kal’ and ‘Hey Inda Kadhal’.

Much discussed, much loved and a matter of national debate for well over a month. The usage of English words in such an informal manner, Dhanush’s drunken style rendition, his constant friendly banter with the music composer, his natural ease at expressing feelings, the rustic beats and nadaswaram (pa pa pa) etc. etc. There is so much going for this song. The term ‘soup boys’ is like a big legend now. Can’t wait to see this song on screen. 3 will earn big bucks in the opening weekend on the strength of this song alone.

Verdict: Anirudh Ravichander has delivered so much variety in his very first album. Such a promising debut by a composer hasn’t been seen in recent Tamil cinema history. ‘Kolaveri’ took the initial honors but there are so many other melodic treats that 3 offers. On the whole, an album that will sell like hot cakes.

The album’s most melodramatically rich soundtrack ‘Kangal Neeyae’ is G.V.Prakash Kumar’s surprise offering of the lot. Sitara’s classically refined voice proves to be a perfect choice for the soundtrack as it mellows well in high notes with classically sounding musical arrangements. This somber number works well with the highly expressive lyrics of Thamarai.

G.V Prakash compiles this racy track with delectable contemporary style that delivers an upbeat pep factor.

G.V.Prakash Kumar brings out his impressive flair of instrumentals in ‘Oh Sunandha’ like the delectable electric guitar riffs in the prelude that connects well with the enticing feel of the track. Raman Mahadevan’s lighthearted singing is very impressive and so does the chorus of Caroline & Megha. The change in tempos and moods are handled well by the beautiful orchestration.

The next track ‘Oru Murai’ has an International musical feel to it where both English and Tamil lyrics work well in tandem to epitomize out a cherishable entertainer. Though this sound track kindles the memories of Akon’s ft.T-Pain hola hola, it is a well crafted number in its own league. It sounds as a heavily auto-tuned R&B track, but packs enough spice in the form of rap by Benny Dayal and a cool boisterous show by G.V.Prakashkumar that will turn out to be a chartbusting number.

The need of loud feasting dancing track in the album is fulfilled in the song ‘Sokku Podi’. Baba Segal’s throaty vocals join hands with Shruthi Hassan’s booming voice in creating an enthusiastically high track that will deliver sufficient amusement on the dancing floor. G.V. gives a beat that turns on the celebratory mood and maintains the high spirit of the song.

Yaar Aval Yaro…

The final offering ‘Yaar Aval Yaro’ adds more glam quotient to the show. Mohammed Irfan’s fresh soothing vocals give it an edgy romantic feel and amplify with varying emotional moods of the track. It is a highly trendy and infectious track with the right mix of electronic arrangements and cute addition of Hindustani elements.

GV Prakash Kumar delivers an outstanding album that will be drawing much appreciation and acceptance from the listeners. Chartbusters like ‘Oru Murai’, ‘Yaar Aval Yaro’ are cherry picks and the album lives up to its hyped expectations.

Its party time, as the first track of the album ‘Pappa Pappa Pappapa’ has all rural elements in the right place. The highlight is of course the clever mix of folksy musical arrangements that make for a good celebration number. Yuvan’s fun-filled singing comes alive and is ably supported by the peppy sounding Renu.

Dham Dham Dham…

The next song, ‘Dham Dham’ is naturally an all out boy charmer fun number that bears the stamp of Lingusamy legacy! It’s another attempt to recreate the yesteryear’s hit number ‘Theradi Veethiyil’ from Run. The mellifluous voice of Karthik and Krish make the mood merrier in this quite pleasant sounding number.

Kattipidi Enna…

With simple musical composition and filmy predictable lyrics, Yuvan has managed to create this charming love song. The lovely vocals of Vijay Prakash and Shwetha Pandit are just soothing, especially Vijay Prakash who croons his heart out. Another decent pick that is worth listening to.

After the boys outing number in ‘Dham dham’, it’s the girls turn in ‘Thaiyya Thakka’. It is a cool, effortless soundtrack composed between two sisters in their search for a perfect groom which piles up for a reasonable sounding entertainer. As far as the composition is concerned, it comes like a mix and match of sweet folksy tune wrapped in a mild kuthu. Saindhavi’s suave singing with Harini’s minty fresh vocals establish the lovable chemistry between the two sisters.

Dhama Dhama…

A gentle flute, easy percussions, singers Haricharan-Sheweta Mohan playing the perfect foil and Na.Muthukumar’s uncomplicated lyrics complete the song. But the highlight is the ‘Vaaranam aayiram’ piece.

Vettai has some peppy likeable soundtracks to its credits. Even if it’s not Yuvan’s best, Vettai packages all genres of folksy music well. With songs like ‘Pappa Pappa’ and the romantic ‘Kattipudi’, the album is all set to turn out to be a commercial winner.

Verdict: Yuvan’s folky affair!

Yuvan goes for a simple composition for the beats and instrumentals are so simple. It may take some more time for the song to grab our attention. The mixing is done with excellence, but we don’t find an engrossing factor with the lyrics. The song is middling and doesn’t sound like a piece of work from Yuvan Shankar Raja. Haricharan does his job perfectly.

2. Laddu Laddu Rendu
Voices: Vikram, Priyadarshini, Suchitra
Lyrics: Yugabharathi

The music director has tried to rendering the Kuthu song in late 80s style as in his father Maestro Ilayaraja’s style. Well, we can sense it with the bass, brass and the rhythmic accompaniment. In order to offer a transition, he goes for a DJ kind of work during second verse. The song will be a sure treat for the frontbenchers in theatres with Chiyaan Vikram shaking legs with hotties Reema Sen and Shriya Charan.

3. Villathi Villain
Voices: Mano, Malathi
Lyrics: Yugabharathi

Much alike the previous track, Yuvan goes for the retro-style track. It’s evident with the vocalizing pattern, Live Drums, etc, etc. The song should keep the audiences engrossed with the visuals and the scintillating appearance of Vikram in different get-ups.

4. Paniye Panipoove
Vocals: Javed Ali, Renuka
Lyrics: Yugabharathi

Melodious pick with the singers Javed Ali and Renuka adding more intensity to the romantic feel. It’s a situational song and the lyrics are just average. Yuvan keeps shifting between major and minor scales. The string works can be regarded as one of the best works that occurs during the second interlude.

Raja Pattai has a mixture of mediocre and good tracks. Yuvan Shankar Raja has clearly understood the nature of film ‘Commercial Genre’. ‘Laddu Laddu’ and ‘Villathi Villain’ will surely arrests the senses of audiences.
